Hey Reader, Happy Winter Solstice! On this, shortest and darkest day of the year, I want to bring you a little bit of light. Movement is what provides a lot of light for me. In fact, after I write this, I'm heading out for a hike with my family. It's one of our winter solstice traditions. But it's the daily movement, getting on my mat or on my tap board or into the basement with my weights or out for a run, that really lights me up. Movement makes everything in my life a lot easier and better, so I make time for it. But it hasn't always been that way. (This leads me to my Movement Snack this week) Movement Snack this week: It used to be really difficult for me to make time to move my body. When I was newly postpartum for the first time and recovering, I had no idea how to re-establish my movement practice. I was dealing with a lot -- having another human to care for and feed constantly, a body that did not feel like my own, and less time just for me. It took me over a year to figure out how to get back to movement in a consistent, satisfying way. What I discovered is that consistency is key and the way to be consistent is to make movement easier to do. One of the ways to do that is to shorten the amount of time you're moving. Aiming for 5 minutes, instead of 30. Keeping it simple, instead of complex. To make it easier for you to get moving, I've created a 2 ways to make movement simpler for you. The first is a playlist with movement practices that are 8 minutes or less. Super Quick Movement Practices The second is a Countdown to 2026 with Daily Movement. I'm sharing daily videos on my Bluesky and YouTube channels with a video you can do that is less than 10 minutes long. I'm also offering a special LIVE class on zoom on December 31st. It's my annual RESOLVE TO EVOLVE class to celebrate the end of this year and kick off the year to come with movement and community. We have a lot of fun. (P.S. MOVE members attend as part of your membership, so no need to purchase if you're a member of MOVE) LAST CHANCE FOR WINTER RETREAT: JANUARY 2026 In case you haven't heard, this is the final year that I am offering my annual Winter Retreat. If you want to join me on retreat this January and start the year on your mat, in the woods, and with the best community of people, there are 4 spots left. I'd love for you to come. There is more information here. And if you know you want to join in, you can put your deposit down here Question of the week -- Do you have a winter solstice ritual? I'd love to hear from you and will share what my family does on the solstice, in addition to our annual hike. Warmly, Naomi Want to stay in touch during the week? Here are a 2 easy ways: Follow me on Bluesky, where I try to share daily movement practices as acts of resistance, connection, and strength. Follow me on substack, where I write about the intersection of movement, motherhood, and the culture that we are all moving through. Or better yet, subscribe so you have immediate access to regular essays, including my most recent substack, which is a personal one. I wrote about interfaith marriages -- what JD Vance gets so wrong about them and the perspectives of 4 women in interfaith marriages. Their stories are so beautiful and I am so grateful I get to share them with you. Read it here. There are many ways to support my writing on substack, which focuses on women's health and motherhood during perimenopause through an anti-diet and pro-science lens: 😍 Become a free subscriber Also published last week an article about continuous glucose monitors over on Fit Bottomed Girls, my favorite anti-diet, pro-science fitness platform on the internet. |
Naomi combines playful, powerful movement practices with the science of habit change to make it easier for busy moms to get moving every day. She frequently writes about the intersection of mom life, feminism, diet culture, and the unrealistic standards we hold ourselves to as women. Naomi is passionate about helping moms move more freely in their bodies and feel more at home in their skin.
Hey Reader, I know this is quite possibly the busiest time of year for you and the very last thing you need is more emails, but I wanted to reach out once again about my Winter Retreat. I've decided that this January is the last time I will offer my annual Wintering retreat. I love running this retreat. I love how it's evolved over the years from a strictly yoga retreat to something more interesting. I love the writing and sharing and connecting we do. I love the creativity and the...
Hey Reader, 'Tis the season to feel a combination of extreme joy and extreme overwhelm, am I right? Hanukkah begins tonight, the solstice is next weekend, and Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Boxing Day follow immediately after. Not to mention New Year's....(holy smokes, we're just over 2 weeks out from 2026. Anyone else feel like this is totally bananas?) During this time of year, I anchor into my movement practice with even more persistence because moving my body every day helps keep me grounded and...
Hey Reader, Last night I danced on stage with around 150 other dancers. Not all at once. That would have been chaos. Instead, I danced with the people I take classes with each week. It was similar to the dance recitals I did as a kid, only this was the grown up version. Adult dancers ranging from their early 20's to mid 60's were on stage doing ballet, modern, contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, tap, and burlesque. I danced in 3 different dances -- jazz, contemporary, and my personal favorite, tap....
