Movement Snacks: A quick bodyweight workout!

Hey Reader,

I just got back from vacation with my family and I discovered that no matter where we go or how chill our plans are, daily movement is a challenge.

Despite the fact that I am a movement professional, I still find it difficult to keep up my daily movement practice when on vacation.

I brought my running shoes and managed to run 3 days out of 6 days we were there, but the other 3 days were tough.

Part of it was being away from home and in a space that is not my own.

Part of it was being out of my regular routines and having almost too much schedule “freedom."

A run is relatively easy and straightforward. Running clothes on, shoes laced up, basic plan for distance and where I’m running.

Trying to sort out what to do with my body in someone else’s home is a little trickier. Even when you’re a movement pro, deciding what to do in an different space can be a headache of too many options and not wanting to get in the way.

I figured it out each day, but it wasn’t as smooth as my movement practice at home.

This leads me to my Movement Snack this week.

Movement Snack this week:

My favorite movement practice on vacation was the day I decided to do a simple bodyweight workout. 4 exercises done as a set. 4 sets total. It took me around 10 minutes and I was sweaty after 3 sets, then filmed the 4th set for IG and YouTube.

You can watch it here.

⭐️ Here’s the simple 4 exercise set, if you don’t want to watch:

12 squats
12 alternating opposite shoulder taps in plank
6 step forward lunge (from plank) with a twist
6 eccentric push-ups

If you try it, let me know how you felt about it!

If you want more like it, here’s the good news:

This is exactly why I have a free YouTube channel. To give make movement more accessible and enjoyable. If you’d like me to point you in the direction of more short bodyweight workouts like this one, let me know and I’ll send you one to try!

This is also why I have an online studio. I create a monthly movement calendar to give you movement options every single day of the month at the click of your mouse. Starting in April, I’ll have shorter versions built around different poses, as well as areas of the body. Join MOVE to get access to those!

I also create programs designed to make daily movement more accessible. The Daily 5 has a bunch of bodyweight classes similar to the one I shared above. I’m also creating a brand new program called “A Month of Morning Movement” which will launch in May. Stay tuned for more information about that one!

Question of the week:

If you could go anywhere on vacation and money/time/travel was not an obstacle, where would you go?

I look forward to hearing about your #vacationgoals and hopefully seeing you on the mat soon, too!

Warmly,

Naomi

Want to stay in touch during the week? Here are a 2 easy ways:

Follow me on Bluesky, where I share daily movement practices as acts of resistance, connection, and strength.

Follow me on substack, where I write about the intersection of movement, motherhood, and the culture that we are all moving through. Or better yet, subscribe so you have immediate access to regular essays, including my most recent essay about how MAHA moms are making the personal public, which is not only harmful but allowing the blame for bad health outcomes (like death from measles) to rest squarely on the shoulders of moms, rather than the government which is perpetuating so much misinformation.

***It would also personally mean a lot to me if you supported my work on substack. I had a big goal when I started my substack. I thought 100 people from this list would happily pay to read my writing. Turns out I was off by 98 people.

Although I have slowly built it over the past 18 months, I’d really love to hit 50 by my birthday (April 7th) with the larger goal of 100 by the end of 2025. I’m currently sitting at 47 subscribers, thanks to a few amazing folks who responded to my last email. Subscriptions are $5/month or $50/year. If supporting independent writers and artists is important to you, please consider becoming a paid subscriber to my substack.

Hey Reader, I'm currently in my "child chauffeur era" and Wednesday is currently my busiest day. I have to hustle all 3 of my kids out the door by 4:35pm to get my youngest to her dance class, then run the older 2 to Hebrew school by 5pm so I can swing back and pick up the youngest from dance. After that, we have about 75 minutes before I have to head back out to pick up the older 2. This past Wednesday we were running late and I was cranky about it. My oldest, who is now big enough to sit up...

Hey Reader, Back when I was in my early twenties, I lived in New York City. After graduating from college I interned at Rolling Stone a few days a week, worked at a doggy day care during the other days of the week, and worked as a cocktail waitress a few nights a week. I had a lot of time on my hands and living in NYC was expensive. But in between all of those jobs, I also went to the gym. I mostly did cardio, practicing my new yoga moves (I’d just started doing that, too) on the thick...

Hey Reader, Before I had kids, making time to move my body was relatively easy. It helps that I don’t work a traditional 9-5 job and before kids, I didn’t either. But setting that aside, I could decide to go to a yoga class an hour or 2 before it started, without having to negotiate childcare with my partner. I could go for a run at 7am and not have to worry about making anyone’s breakfast except my own. When I had kids, all of that changed. My time was no longer my own and if I wanted to...
