Movement Snacks: The DAILY 5 is back and better than ever

Hey Reader,

Yesterday morning I did a 50 minute strength training workout, something that would have been almost unthinkable even just 18 months ago.

Let me back up...

After giving birth to my 3rd child, I was able to maintain a daily movement practice, but it often got really condensed. Sometimes I'd manage 20 minutes of yoga. If my husband was around in the morning, I could do a 30 minute run once or twice a week. Sometimes I was able to squeeze in a strength training workout online, between 15 and 45 minutes. But that 45 minutes was a rarity.

More often than not, I was doing 10 minutes of strength work. A few loops around the cul de sac we lived on at the time, while my youngest did chalk art. A quick yoga practice that could fit in the space of a Bluey episode or 2.

It wasn't ideal but I was still moving my body everyday and that was enough.

Eventually, things shifted. My daily movement stretched out a bit. I adjusted my workout timing to make longer practices possible. As my kids got a little older and more independent, I was able to get them on board with the changes in my time and availability. It's been a slow process.

Now I'm able to make 30-50 minute workouts my standard.

But it all started with recognizing that 5 or 10 minutes of movement was enough and sticking with those short practices every day.

That leads me to my movement snack...

There are seasons of life that are just busier. For those seasons, 5 minute workouts are such a great option. Several studies indicate that it's movement consistency that is most important in regard to physical health as we age.

Moving a little bit everyday can make a huge difference.

My latest video on YouTube is a workout that you can do in 5 minutes. It's entirely bodyweight and no weight bearing on your hands, either. You will work up a little sweat, though! Watch it here:

Want to stay in touch during the week? Here are a 2 easy ways:

Follow me on YouTube. I share strength and movement practices twice monthly and shorter educational/inspirational videos 3 times a week, plus (almost) daily posts.

Follow me on substack, where I write about the intersection of movement, perimenopause, and the culture that we are all moving through. Or better yet, subscribe so you have immediate access to regular essays, including my most recent substacks.
Most recently I shared an interview with Helene Wecker, author of the incredible The Golem and The Jinni trilogy -- the 3rd and final book in the series was published on September 15th. This story is an immigrant story at heart, but is filled with magic and power and purpose. For whatever reason, this interview isn't getting a lot of love over on my substack, so if you're able, please read it here.

There are many ways to support my writing on substack, which focuses on women's fitness, health, and motherhood during perimenopause through an anti-diet and pro-science lens:
