Movement Snacks: This one is for the mothers and others

Hey Reader,

I have to keep this quick because as we speak, 2 of my kids are turning one of our bathrooms into a mini spa.

It's Mother's Day and they want to give me the spa treatment without even leaving the house. I'm just delighted that they cleaned their bathroom.

If I'm honest, I'm not much a fan of Mother's Day. I love my mom and think she is wonderful (Hi, mom! Happy Mother's Day!) and I love being a mom. But I also wish that this care and kindness was extended to us for more than just a day. I also wish that we could prioritize things like paid leave, better postpartum support, affordable childcare, and better paid vacation time instead of brunches and flowers one day a year.

Anyway, since for now we need to work with what we have, I have some movement for you.

This leads me to my Movement Snack this week.

Movement Snack this week:

I have several classes on my YouTube channel geared toward moms. One of the most popular is this one, which is Mother's Day specific:

If you want something that is less movement and more meditative, here's one for you:

And if you want to check out the entire Movement for Moms playlist, you look through all of the videos here:

Movement for Moms YouTube playlist

There are videos for prenatal yoga and postnatal yoga. Videos for yoga with babies, toddlers, and bigger kids, too. There are practices for postpartum core support (including diastasis recti repair) and pelvic floor health. There's yoga for nursing moms and restorative yoga. There is something for everymom.

And if you look through this list and feel like there is something missing -- something that you wish I had a practice for -- let me know and I'll create it for you!

From my mat to yours, I hope you have the day your body needs.

Question of the week:

Who is your favorite mom in a book, movie, or tv show?

I look forward to hearing about the moms you love in literature/on screen and hopefully seeing you on the mat soon, too!

Warmly,

Naomi

Want to stay in touch during the week? Here are a 2 easy ways:

Follow me on Bluesky, where I share daily movement practices as acts of resistance, connection, and strength.

Follow me on substack, where I write about the intersection of movement, motherhood, and the culture that we are all moving through. Or better yet, subscribe so you have immediate access to regular essays, including my most recent substack which is a love letter to libraries. If you are also a library fan this one is for you.

As always, if you'd like to support my writing, you can do that by simply reading and liking my pieces on substack. Even better, comment on them and share them with those who might love them, too. And of course the best way to support my work is with a paid subscription, which allows me to continue to do the writing I love.

One more quick writing note: I recently published a piece about why bouncing back postpartum is not a fitness goal. Diet culture has no business in your postpartum experience. You can read this piece over on the Fit Bottomed Girls platform, which is my favorite online platform for a healthy, anti-diet approach to movement and fitness.

Hey Reader, I'm writing this from a Courtyard Marriott while my kids are still asleep. We're on our second day of driving halfway across the country for a month of vacation. Needless to say, roadtrip movement is different than at-home movement. It's a little shorter, for one. If circumstances were difference, I could swing down to the gym but I'm solo with my kids, so instead I'll stay here in my room and just do a standing yoga flow. Likely it will be 10 minutes of movement, tops. Quietly,...

Hey Reader, One of my biggest pet peeves within the fitness community is the idea that doing a small amount of movement is sending a bad message. Specifically, there are lots of fitness pros out there -- some of whom I actually respect and whose work I appreciate -- who say that when we tell students it's ok to do less movement, we're doing them a disservice by not pushing them to workout at their full capacity. But the thing is, not everyone has the ability to move their bodies like that...

Hey Reader, This has been a hell of a week. 2 weeks, really. I mean this personally, in that all 3 of my kids have been sick over the past 2 weeks and I inadvertently food poisoned myself right in the middle of all of that. I've also been soloparenting through the peak of the sickness. And it's also been a hell of a week for our country. For the world. Every morning I wake up wondering what fresh horrors I'll read about in the news. It feels overwhelming and scary and uncertain. I feel...
