Why Did I Build a Fitness App?
|
Hey Reader, I never thought that I would be someone with a fitness app. I don't even like apps! Or at least, app clutter. Plus, I'm one of those people who prefers to type on a desktop, not a tiny screen. Still, when Studio.com reached out to me with the offer to build an app on their platform, I jumped at the opportunity. Here's why: A lot of apps in the fitness space prioritize things that I don't think are useful when it comes to fitness, particularly when they are geared toward women. 1️⃣ They tend to place a high value on weight loss and a low value on building real strength. What this looks like is an emphasis on reducing caloric intake and working with very light handweights to avoid "bulking up." 2️⃣ Many apps are geared toward longer workouts (30 minutes +), suggesting fitness is simply not possible in 10-15 minute bursts. 3️⃣ When it comes to strength and movement for women in perimenopause and older, often the guidance is a greater focus on joint mobility and balance, but a lighter focus on strength. They tend to treat women in midlife and older as fragile, instead of using strength training as a way to combat the fragility we all want to avoid as we age. I wanted to build an app that didn't scare women off of strength training, while avoiding the diet culture nonsense encouraging us to stay small and nonthreatening as we get older. So if you haven't checked it out yet, my app is called Strength in Midlife -- A Daily Movement App for Aging Well. Inside the app you'll find strength training workouts, yoga flows, and mobility practices, as well as a library stocked with restorative and therapeutic practices when you need them. And as always, the practices are brief -- each clocking in at 10-20 minutes long -- so you can fit them easily into your day. The cool thing about the app is that it is customizable to your needs and choices. You can opt to do 2 strength workouts with weights per week and have the rest of the classes be core, yoga, and mobility. Or you could opt for 3 or 4 strength workouts per week. The good news is, you don't have to build the movement schedule yourself. The app, built by me, will create it for you using videos I made for you. In the meantime, I am monumentally proud of what I have created. My hope is that it will make daily movement more accessible, strength more attainable, and aging feel more powerful. Please head on over to Strength in Midlife and learn a little more about my app. Even if it's not for you, it might benefit someone you know. Let's get stronger, together! Naomi REMINDER: I'll be sharing about my app for the next 8 days while there's a big sale going on to launch my app, as well as many others. f you don't want to receive a bunch of extra emails, you can click here and I promise you'll only receive my Sunday/Monday Movement Snack in the next 2 weeks. |
