That might seem like an odd way to start, but it's mostly to say that even though I love to move my body, jumping jacks are one of the ways I do not love moving my body. Spoiler alert: there are no jumping jacks in the DAILY 5. The reason I mention this is that not everyone likes moving their bodies in the same way. Some people love lifting weights while other people love yoga. Some people love both. Some people love running while other people would only run if they were being chased by a bear (which I hear is a bad idea, actually) The thing is, we don't always know what we like until we try a lot of things. Sometimes we need to try more than once in a new way. And sometimes we like different ways of moving at different times in our life. Even more, as adults we tend to be fairly set in our ways. Trying out something new can be unappealing and not always easy. I had all of that in mind when I created the DAILY 5. My intention was to build a lot of variety into the DAILY 5 so that movement would feel new and exciting every day. In fact, that's one of the things that past participants have said they are so grateful for -- one participant after finishing said, ""This really broke the rut I was in with yoga/fitness. I loved the creativity of the classes. I would get really excited to see what was on the agenda for the day. I was impressed with the variety and your enthusiasm." Why does variety matter? Our bodies want it. Here's an example: if you want to build strength, you need to be consistent with a particular exercise but after awhile, you'll hit a wall. So you need to switch things up. Here's another example: in yoga, if you are doing the same series of poses over and over, it's easy to check out and go on autopilot. When you're confronted with an unfamiliar sequence, you have to pay attention which helps you in the transitions from one pose to the next, which in turn is healthier movement for your body. The classes in the DAILY 5 are full of variety. Over the course of 30 days, you won't do anything twice and you won't get bored. And having this amount of exposure to different types of movement -- creative yoga flows, strength training with weights, mobility work, and bodyweight strength plus cardio -- can also lay the foundation for having a more varied movement practice when the DAILY 5 is over.
