Movement Snacks: A little something for your hips

Hey Reader,

I'm going to keep this quick because likely you've heard a lot from me this week, thanks to my Daily 5 program which started yesterday.

I never want to be an unwanted or unhelpful presence in your inbox. My intention is to give you useful tips, brief movement practices, and encourage you to get moving a little more often, with a little more ease.

I believe movement is a radical act.

It doesn't matter to me so much how you move your body. My particular areas of expertise are yoga, strength training, running, and dance -- I don't teach all of these, but they all influence my teaching. So when I share something movement-related, it's going to fall into the category of yoga-ish or getting stronger.

However, all forms of movement are good ones.

The goal is to get moving because being in your body is an act of resistance, especially right now.

Movement can help you feel more grounded, more focused, more confident, and more connected on an energetic level, but from a physical standpoint, movement can make you feel stronger, as well as helping you move with more ease.

This is crucial at a time when everything feels overwhelming and unstable.

This leads me to my Movement Snack this week.

Movement Snack this week:

If you want to give your hips a little extra love, try Lizard Pose. It's the pose of the month in my online studio MOVE with Naomi, so we're incorporating Lizard into all of our practices this month.

If you like Lizard pose and you want to see how it shows up in longer classes, reply directly to this email and I'm happy to share a taste of what those classes feel like.

If you try this pose, let me know what you think of it. How do your hips feel after doing one small, but impactful act of movement?

Last thing:

This week on my substack, I'm writing a more in depth look at why movement is a radical act. If you're not subscribed there, can you take a minute and subscribe?

We need movement now. Not just on our own, but together.

I have lots of ways you can get moving. Some are free, like subscribing to my YouTube channel, but those are also solo endeavors.

If you want to be a part of a movement community, join us in MOVE. There are live classes 5 days a week, all currently at 12pm ET. Those classes are 30 and 15 minutes long, depending on the day. There's also an enormous library of recorded classes, but if you're looking for gathering and moving together, the live classes are where it's at.

If joining the studio isn't in the cards, but you want to do occasional drop-ins, my Wednesday class is the only class on my schedule that is currently open for drop-ins. To get onto that list, click through here. You'll have to add yourself in manually, but when you do, you'll be added to a group I email every Tuesday with a reminder about class the following day.

I look forward to hearing about your adventures with lizard pose and maybe even seeing you on the mat soon!

Warmly,

Naomi

Hey Reader, I'm currently in my "child chauffeur era" and Wednesday is currently my busiest day. I have to hustle all 3 of my kids out the door by 4:35pm to get my youngest to her dance class, then run the older 2 to Hebrew school by 5pm so I can swing back and pick up the youngest from dance. After that, we have about 75 minutes before I have to head back out to pick up the older 2. This past Wednesday we were running late and I was cranky about it. My oldest, who is now big enough to sit up...

Hey Reader, I just got back from vacation with my family and I discovered that no matter where we go or how chill our plans are, daily movement is a challenge. Despite the fact that I am a movement professional, I still find it difficult to keep up my daily movement practice when on vacation. I brought my running shoes and managed to run 3 days out of 6 days we were there, but the other 3 days were tough. Part of it was being away from home and in a space that is not my own. Part of it was...

Hey Reader, Back when I was in my early twenties, I lived in New York City. After graduating from college I interned at Rolling Stone a few days a week, worked at a doggy day care during the other days of the week, and worked as a cocktail waitress a few nights a week. I had a lot of time on my hands and living in NYC was expensive. But in between all of those jobs, I also went to the gym. I mostly did cardio, practicing my new yoga moves (I’d just started doing that, too) on the thick...
