Movement Snacks: A strength training workout you can do in 5 minutes

Hey Reader,

I've been working out hard lately. I started working with a coach who designs a week of fitness programming for me at a time -- and it's been incredible. Working with her has shifted the way I have been moving my body (more on that in a few weeks!)

But it hasn't always been this way.

In fact for the past 10 years or so, my movement practice has been consistent but brief. Some days I'd manage 30 minutes of movement, but others were closer to 10-15. Some days, I'd squeak out 5 minutes and call it good.

And if I'm honest, I actually loved the shorter classes. They fit my life and felt good.

Most recently, before I started working with my coach, my strength training practices were the shortest of my daily movement. On a good day, I might do 20 minutes of a pre-recorded workout but most days, I'd do a 2-exercise strength set, 3x through with a 1 minute break in between sets.

And while most personal trainers and strength coaches would say that's not enough to build strength, I am significantly stronger than I was in my 20's when I had way more time to work out and did.

This leads me to my Movement Snack this week.

Movement Snack this week:

I recognize that my personal story is anecdotal.

And, building a consistent habit of movement -- strength training included -- will help you build strength in the long run.

The key is in the consistency.

What helps increase consistency is ease of actually doing the habit you're trying to establish and sustain.

So if you're starting from no strength training whatsoever or you are trying to build it back in, a 5 minute workout is a great place to start.

You're in luck because I shared a 5-minute strength training practice on my YouTube channel today. Watch it here:

This practice is an abbreviated version of one of the strength-focused classes I recorded for my online studio MOVE with Naomi this summer. If you're a member, you got the full practice in June (a slightly different version of squats, but otherwise the same) plus warm up and yoga flow to "cool down."

If you enjoy this practice and want more 5 minute movement classes like it, you'll love my DAILY 5 program, which officially begins on September 1st. If you sign up for the DAILY 5 you'll receive a 5 minute movement practice every day for a month. These classes are flows like the one I shared today but also include bodyweight strength, mobility, mellow movement, and strength training with weights. The idea is to give you a taste of your movement options while building the habit of moving your body daily.

If you'd like a little more information, check out the webpage here.

If you'd like to see my 3 pricing options, you can see them here.

And if you don't want to receive additional emails a few times a week for the next 2 weeks, please click here and you'll only continue to receive Movement Snacks on Sunday.

Question of the week:

Pool or beach? I'll tell you which I prefer when you respond to this email to tell me your preference.

I look forward to hearing about from you and hopefully see you on the mat soon, too!

Warmly,

Naomi

Want to stay in touch during the week? Here are a 2 easy ways:

Follow me on Bluesky, where I share daily movement practices as acts of resistance, connection, and strength.

Follow me on substack, where I write about the intersection of movement, motherhood, and the culture that we are all moving through. Or better yet, subscribe so you have immediate access to regular essays, including my most recent substack, a deeply personal piece that is a tribute to my Auntie Milly and everything she taught me about aging without compromising. You can read it here.

As always, if you'd like to support my writing, you can do that by simply reading and liking my pieces on substack. Even better, comment on them and share them with those who might love them, too. And of course the best way to support my work is with a paid subscription, which allows me to continue to do the writing I love and be compensated for my work.

(not interested in the Daily 5? Scroll down a bit so you can opt-out of these Daily 5 specific promotional emails) Hey Reader, Today I did a 30 minute workout of heavy lifting (back squats), some supplemental weight lifting, and impact training. I'm working with a coach and she's programming all of it for me. I love it. But working out for this amount of time is somewhat new for me. For a long time, I found myself squeezing in 5-10 minute strength training practices because it's all I had the...

(not interested in the Daily 5? Scroll down a bit so you can opt-out of these Daily 5 specific promotional emails) Hey Reader, I want to tell you a bit about why I created the DAILY 5. As someone who loves to move her body, movement comes naturally to me. I don't have to convince myself to do it. Whether I'm lifting weights or doing yoga or taking a dance class or going for a run, I love to move. But after I had kids, what I found difficult was making the same space for movement that I had...
