As someone who loves to move her body, movement comes naturally to me. I don't have to convince myself to do it. Whether I'm lifting weights or doing yoga or taking a dance class or going for a run, I love to move. But after I had kids, what I found difficult was making the same space for movement that I had before. Especially when my kids were new and little, I struggled to get on my mat for very long. There were diapers to change and babies who needed nursing. As they got older, it was help wiping their butts and making lunches (not usually one right after the other - don't worry). Even now that my kids are older and are able to do so much more, I'm still busy in the morning, reminding them to get dressed and have breakfast and gather their school stuff and get out the door by a certain time, so they don't miss the bus. Initially, I felt really badly about shortening my movement time. I thought I was supposed to do yoga for an hour and lift weights for at least 30 minutes. Some days I could only manage 5 minutes in the midst of the chaos. And yet, those 5 minutes felt so good. They helped me keep the habit of movement on busy days so I stayed consistent. Keeping the habit allowed me to add more movement in on days when I had more time. This is why I created the DAILY 5. Building consistency is key to starting a sustaining a habit. But building consistency isn't easy, especially when you're starting from scratch. So one simple way to build consistency, is to make the habit as easy as possible. 5 minutes of movement is about as easy as it gets. I'm not the only person who feels that way. One of the past participants of the DAILY 5 said this about her experience: "So fabulous, Naomi! I love the whole idea of the Daily 5. So tiny and yet so good! The 5 minute thing so utterly works for me.I’m really glad I signed up" 5 minutes can contain more than you might realize. 5 minutes can make such a huge difference, particularly if you're starting at zero. The DAILY FIVE is for you if: You've been looking to create a daily home movement practice and don't know how to start You've been wanting a more consistent home movement practice and are struggling to make it happen You've been wanting more variety in your movement practice and feel stuck with the same basic poses You've been wanting to add more diversity to your movement practice but feel a little intimidated by strength training You want to move everyday but feel like you just don't have the time You like to have a plan so you don't have to do the work to figure out your daily practice If any of these are you, the DAILY 5 will help. I'm working with a coach and she's programming all of it for me. I love it. But working out for this amount of time is somewhat new for me. For a long time, I found myself squeezing in 5-10 minute strength training practices because it's all I had the...
Hey Reader, I've been working out hard lately. I started working with a coach who designs a week of fitness programming for me at a time -- and it's been incredible. Working with her has shifted the way I have been moving my body (more on that in a few weeks!) But it hasn't always been this way. In fact for the past 10 years or so, my movement practice has been consistent but brief. Some days I'd manage 30 minutes of movement, but others were closer to 10-15. Some days, I'd squeak out 5...
